Was the source of the noise ever discovered?
Drivers and utilites for ASRock motherboards - choice of model.
My first choices for that would be the video card, PSU, or the board were damaged from the misuse of Afterburner. If the source of that noise was never discovered, which most likely was a component failure, then a damaged piece of hardware is probably still being used.
Since Afterburner was used to OC the video card to much, and assuming the sound heard was a component failing somewhere, the video card is questionable. Testing it ASRock B150M Pro4V Intel ME would only be done with gaming with it for a decent period of time in a similar PC. Question, in all the various testing with memtest, Ubuntu, and Windows 7, were you using the identical hardware configuration?
For example, you used the video card with Ubuntu, and installed a driver for the video card? Running Ubuntu at the desktop only was not much of a test of the hardware. Some motherboard companies stick a label across the unused pins, to make it easier to figure out where a 2x2 connector goes. There is a picture on page 33 of the downloadable manual, which shows two black wires on the left, and two yellow wires on the right, of the ATX12V 2x2 connector.
The staff at Asrock cannot count, which is why the two figures have the number "6" in the right hand corner, instead of "5". I replied to Paul: I've looked at the cpu socket pins with a magnifying glass and nothing seems amiss.
Good idea to try and force a beep by pulling the RAM. I'll let you know how it turns out. Do you think that the 14 secs it will run for is enough time to trigger the warning? Is there an easy way to check if the processor is getting power?
The PSU is definitely sending power to the motherboard connector and the pre-applied thermal paste was part melted when I removed the cooler. The printed manual also shows pin 5 with the number 6!
I got this answer from Paul: It should look for RAM pretty soon after it starts. Some of the BIOS code runs "in registers only", until the Northbridge is programmed and the memory controller is set up.
If the BIOS code is really running, 14 seconds should be enough time for some beeping. Something you should know about recent Intel chipsets, is they have a microcontroller inside them. Even though other OSes might be compatible as well, we do not recommend applying this release on platforms other than the ones specified.
